A test of power May 24, 2013
A big part of her status as a political insider may have been tested last night with a fundraiser for the congressman she and RR tried to overthrow, but whom the Virgin Mayor is once against courting as a political ally.
Since she is the self-declared confidential secretary to the
Virgin Mayor, you would think she would have to make an appearance as well –
since the Virgin Mayor was rumored to attend.
She would most definitely be at his side if her position is
an important as she makes it out to be.
Half the reason, I went was to see if the Virgin Mayor
showed up at all, and to see if she had gall enough to walk into the lion’s den
after all she tried to do to bring the congressman down while working at our
office.
I suspected she might not make an appearance even if the
virgin mayor did, partly because down deep she hasn’t that kind of courage.
She tends to boast a lot – especially to the office gossips,
and exaggerates things on her Facebook page when in the safer company of her
family and close friends, but seems to hide from the consequences of things she’s
done.
She does not handle confrontation well.
She also tends not to do well in unfamiliar environments, or
in situations in which she lacks total control. But where she is in control, or
knows the landscape, she may well be invincible, such as a barroom setting or
as I anticipated last year, at a social event such as a magazine launch party.
Despite her making a place for herself in the political arena,
this is not her turf, and she has yet to learn all the rules. Too many players
know the turf and the rules better, making it a mine field for a novice like
her.
She did well up north at the Virgin Mayor’s fundraiser
earlier, where nearly all the people involved knew her and her connection to
the mayor.
“D” who replaced her on her beat was impressed with her
ability to organize the international women’s day event in the Virgin Mayor’s
town, but she had the clout of the mayor behind her, and “D” had something of a
crush on her as well.
Her strength has always come from her ability to attach herself
to powerful people and then operate in a realm those powerful people control.
While she sees herself as a player, she is still trying
desperately to prove herself – which explain the phone calls she’s made to find
dirt of the enemies of the Virgin Mayor, or even her continued attempt to control
what we print – she emailed D’s replacement the other day offering him guidance,
something that so confused him that he showed me the email and asked me what this
was all about.
I told him she was trying to be helpful, when I suspect she
was trying to do to him what she did to D – steering him towards stories she wanted
him to cover.
I say this with some cynicism, but in truth, that is what a
good press person is supposed to do.
Still, there is a disparity between who she claims to be and
who she really is, something reflected in her poetry, and is referred to by psychologists
as “social distance,” meaning you don’t actually believe what you profess to be
– at least, not at first.
Over time, people tend to act out some role they wish to be
and eventually evolve into it.
With her, the evolution rarely has time to take effect, and
she often moves on to something else before she can solidify her character.
So, the fundraiser for the man she attempted to destroy
would not be the most comfortable environment for her – especially when the
congressman (or at least his chief henchman) is the person who forced her to
resign from our office.
As it turns out, the Virgin Mayor did make an appearance,
and without her, leaving me to wonder if perhaps she was not nearly as personal
a secretary to him after all, and that her real connection to power remains in
the hands of RR.
